Our top 5 most beautiful villages in Provence
Our beautiful region is one of the most visited in France, especially in summer. It is easy to spend several weeks of vacation there without getting bored, between visits to historical monuments, hikes and picturesque villages, here is our top 5 of our favorite villages to visit urgently!
Roussillon We start with one of the most beautiful villages! With its orange colors, this small village is a living postcard! The village is also known for its many art workshops and pottery artisans.
Not to be missed, the Sentier des Ocres! A magnificent hike often called "the Provençal Colorado" and rightly so, the atypical landscapes are reminiscent of Colorado. The trail offers two paths depending on your level and if you have young children. A little tip: bring shoes that you won't mind getting dirty! The ochre can be difficult to remove!
Les Baux-de-Provence Without doubt the most famous village in Provence, tourists flock here from all over the world in the summer. The visit of the town is very pleasant, in the middle of summer its stone houses protect us from the heat of the sun. Stroll through its cobbled streets lined with small traders, enter the many food shops and taste some of our specialties.
Do not miss the visit of the castle which is at the very top. It is very well documented, allow at least two hours to go around it. If you are traveling with your family, we recommend that you do the investigation game which can be taken directly at the castle ticket office.
Avignon Who does not know the famous song that made our pretty bridge so famous!
Much larger than Les Baux-de-Provence, its old historic center is not to be missed, between cobbled streets, small shops and historical monuments.
Don't miss a visit to the Palais des Papes, the Petit Palais museum or the Pont d'Avignon and end your day with a stroll in the cool of the Rocher des Doms where you can drink a coffee in front of the swans.
The Place du Palais des Papes is magnificent and you will find very good restaurants there.
L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue Located just before the Fontaine de Vaucluse, this pretty village is known for its second-hand dealers.
Lovers of art, rare or unusual pieces, you are in the right place! You will find dozens of second-hand shops at all prices. Don't miss the typically Provencal city center with its many shops and restaurants.
Before leaving the city, don't miss the biscuit and delicacy factory "les délices du Lubéron" which sells its products directly there, as well as "la rue des roues" with all its water wheels.
La Fontaine de Vaucluse Our favorite village of all! Straight out of a Provençal nativity scene! Nestled in the hills sheltered from the heat. The climb to see the chasm and the source of the fountain is quite easy and does not take long, if you are lucky you will see the chasm well filled. Continue your walk along the Sorgue and its clear blue-green water.
Don't miss the visit to the underground world which offers a reconstruction of the cave and explains in detail the formation of the chasm, or the artisans' gallery with its glass blowers and finally the village paper mill still in operation.
